Treatment
Sanford PICU patient outcomes consistently rank on par with the national averages in mortality rates and in length of patient hospital stay. The experience of the team, there expertise and the equipment reflect the particular needs of children who are in need of intensive medical care. The PICU participates in a national PICU medical database to assess the quality of intensive medical care and compare national standards for best medical practices. Participation helps ensure we are providing high level of care for children here in this region.
Treatment
The Children's Hospital and PICU offers, but is not limited to, the following treatment:
- General surgery
- Trauma including severe traumatic brain injuries
- Invasive cardiac procedures (cardiac catheterization and catheter closure of heart defects) and selected heart surgery and postoperative care
- Respiratory distress and respiratory failure are disorders that affect your child's ability to breathe and use his/her lungs efficiently. This may require the use of mechanical ventilation to help your child breath
- Nitric oxide administration
- Complex and refractory seizure disorders
- Surgery for scoliosis and complex orthopedic conditions
- Cleft lip and palate surgical repair
- Treatment of pediatric malignancies
- Surgery for brain tumors
- Treatment for accidental poisoning or drug overdose
- Neurosurgery that involves surgery related to the nerves, brain or the spinal cord
- Facial reconstruction/ reconstructive surgery
- Scoliosis -- a lateral curvature of the spine
- Severe infection
- Acute illnesses and exacerbations of chronic illnesses
