Treatment Team

Radiation Oncologists

Our radiation oncology team is headed by board certified radiation oncologists—physicians specializing in the use of radiation to treat cancer. These highly trained specialists establish treatment plans and oversee each patient's individual care.

Radiation Physicists

Radiation physicists are another important member of the team. They make sure the equipment we use is working properly and ensure that the machines deliver the proper dose. Our radiation physicists are board certified.

Dosimetrists

Dosimetrists play a major role in treatment planning. They examine the CT scans created during the simulation and use that information to help the radiation oncologist plan how many treatments are needed, where those treatments should be given and how long each treatment will last. Our dosimetrists are board certified.

Radiation Therapists

Radiation therapists are the people you will have the most direct contact with during your time in the Radiation Oncology Department. They are the ones who position you for your treatments, prepare the equipment to deliver the radiation, monitor the treatment delivery and take special x-rays called port films to verify that the area being treated correctly matches the treatment plan. Our radiation therapists are all registered.

Radiation Nurses

The radiation nursing team provides nursing care to patients in the Radiation Oncology Department. Radiation nurses are RNs who have special training in radiation care and are responsible for helping you learn about your treatment and how to manage side effects. They can also refer you to other services at Sanford, including social services, dietary services, health ministry and patient services. Oncology-certified nurses are available as part of this team.
